Clients have received over $625,000.00 worth of Eye care benefits from 2011 thru 2024.  These benefits include free eye exams, free eyeglasses, free reading glasses and free referrals to eye care specialists.

 

  • Capacity is 22 people on days of operations, which vary month to month.  Call SHIP to make an appointment.

  • Children under 3 years old are not eligible.

  • Provide eye examinations for patients on the first Thursday of each month from around 9:30 am to 1pm, by appointment.

  • Examinations are provided by eye specialists of the N.J. Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired Eye Examination Unit.

  • Prescriptions for glasses or medications will be written as required.

  • Review and interpret findings of examinations.

  • Provide written reports of all eye examinations to include identification of those who require early of immediate attention.

  • The N.J. Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired Eye Examination Unit will evaluate blind or visually impaired patients for educational or rehabilitation services and provide financial or other assistance towards eye care or treatment for patients determined by the Commission to be eligible for such assistance.

  • Take all required steps to assure that the eye specialist recommendations are implemented, both with reference to care of eye pathology, as well as to provision of glasses and referral for routine or periodic examinations.

  • Forward completed follow-up records for designated patients to the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
